365 Days of Middle-earth ~ Day 79: Kine of Araw

The Kine of Araw were a large breed of horned, white cattle, often found in the lands near the Sea of Rhûn. Wild and noble creatures, they were greatly prized beasts, and frequently hunted. They were believed to have been brought by the legendary Kine of Araw (whose Quenya name was Oromë), the Huntsman of the Valar. It was also believed that the horses of Éothéod – in particular, the Mearas, Princes of Horses – may have been descended from animals brought to Middle-earth by Araw.

Additionally, the Great Horn, which was worn by the heirs of the Stewards, was made from a great horn of one of the Kine killed by Vorondil. The Horn eventually fell into the possession of Boromir, son of Denethor; upon his death, the Horn was cloven in two by Uruk-hai.
