Gondor had long been threatened by the Wainriders, who had formed an alliance with the Haradrim and launched a dual attack on Ithilien – the Wainriders attacked from the north, while the Haradrim invaded the south.
The King of Gondor, Ondoher, with his sons, Artamir and Faramir, defended against the northern assault, though they were defeated, leaving Gondor defenseless. In the south, however, the Haradrim were defeated by the Gondorian Captain Eärnil, who led Gondor’s Southern Army.
In TA 1944, the Northern and Southern Armies of Gondor headed north and attacked the Wainriders as they were in their camp celebrating the conquest of Gondor. Eärnil, leading of the Southern Army, drove the Wainriders out of Ithilien. Many perished in the Dead Marshes, while others fled east to Dagorlad. This battle, along with the prior victory over the Wainriders and Haradrim in South Ithilien, ended the Wainriders’ threat to Gondor. As a reward, Pelendur, the Steward of Gondor, offered Eärnil the crown of Ondoher.
