|Grond in Peter Jackson's Return of the King|
Grond was a hundred foot long battering ram (said to be sixty feet high and as thick as an enormous tree) used to break the Great Gate of Minas Tirith during the Battle of the Pelennor (TA 3019). Forged in the later part of the Third Age, it was made of black steel shaped like a wolf’s head. Fire burned inside its mouth, and it required the strength of many great beasts. It was named after the mace of Morgoth, the Hammer of the Underworld, which was his chief weapon. Aided by “spells of ruin,” Grond was so evil that it has been said that many of the creatures wielding it went mad; but with just four blows, it was able to break through the Great Gate.
