Recently Discovered: Tolkien's Annotated Map of Middle-earth

A map of Middle-earth, featuring annotations from Professor Tolkien himself, was recently discovered in an old copy of The Lord of the Rings once belonging to illustrator Pauline Baynes.

Notations include that Hobbiton is the same latitude as Oxford, England, and that the city of Minas Tirith was likely inspired by Ravenna in Italy.

Blackwell's Rare Books in the UK is selling the map for £60,000 ($121,000) with a representative for the company calling it "the finest piece of Tolkien ephemera to emerge in the last 20 years at least."
